Newcastle Labour Club rent dispute causes sudden shock closureThe not-for-profit venue had only moved to the Haymarket premises little under a year agoView Image Newcastle Labour Club (Image: ChronicleLive)A longstanding social club with decades of history in Newcastle city centre has closed suddenly amid a rent dispute with its landlords. Newcastle Labour Club shut its doors suddenly this week, with a notice appearing on the door talking of unpaid rent and signed by landlords Hanro Group. The dispute emerged as the club is said to have struggled to pay its first quarter rent, and approached Hanro for new terms ahead of its second quarter rent being due. Its club secretary said Hanro had turned down a proposal to make rent - which totals about £100,000 per year - a weekly payment. Mr Barrie said Hanro had helped with the club’s first quarter rent and had wanted it to occupy the Haymark premises on a long lease.
