The International Criminal Court (ICC) has referred Italy to the Assembly of States Parties over its failure to comply with court orders in the case of Osama Njeem, a former head of Libya’s judicial police, who is wanted on charges of crimes against humanity. The case dates back to November, when Njeem was arrested in Tripoli over allegations of torturing detainees, resulting in the death of one of them, according to the ICC. He was later detained in the Italian city of Turin under an ICC arrest warrant, before being released after just two days, the UK newspaper The Guardian reported. Italian authorities subsequently flew Njeem back to Tripoli on a military aircraft, a move that sparked widespread criticism over Rome’s adherence to its international legal obligations. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defended the decision, saying Njeem posed a threat to Italy’s national security.
