0Colleta DewaJohannesburg - The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has said arms imports by African countries decreased by a notable of 6.5% over the past decade. According to SIPRI, between 2009–13 and 2014–18, arms imports by African states decreased by 6.5% although North African nations have increased defence spending. “Most spending was in North Africa, with Algeria accounting for 56% of African arms imports, Morocco for 15% and Nigeria for 4.8%. The four countries in North Africa (Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia) accounted for 75% of African arms imports. Their arms imports increased by 20% between 2009–13 and 2014–18,” said SIPRIThe organisation added that countries in sub-Saharan Africa received 25% of total African imports in 2014–14 with their arms imports decreasing by 45% between 2009–13 and 2014–18.
