The most senior officer in the Gideon Orkah military coup of 1990, Col. Tony Nyiam (rtd), has stressed the need for an internal security strategy to contain enemies within the Nigerian territory. Such security strategy, he noted, would also tackle foreign invaders such as the military armed transnational Bororo Fulani militia, who are invading farming communities in the North. Nyiam also suggested the need for across the board fourfold expansion of armed forces, police and other national security agencies personnel strength, as well as the need for an independent Nigerian National Security Think Tank. He added that resource persons to the presidency should be added to the security apparatus in addressing immediate security threats, as well as initiate and advise the President on medium to long- term solutions to the security challenges. Nyiam said there should be a National Guard with heavier arms at the national level so that with the consent of the National Assembly, the President could direct it to reinforce a challenged state guard.
