On Tuesday, the caretaker government of Pakistan announced a plan of breathtaking scope with improbable deadlines: it will, it said, rid the country of illegal immigrants within months. It is an effort that will be closely watched by Zimbabweans in South Africa, and which may provide South Africa something of a preview of the country's future. From 1 November, Pakistan will deport all illegal immigrants, using systems such as a new portal where citizens can report foreigners, Interior Minister Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti announced after a meeting chaired by the prime minister, with the army and civil service in attendance.
