New technologies will be introduced to improve the current processing systems and to support online passport applications. But it is the redesign of the passport book that will be the most obvious change to travellers. The Department of Foreign Affairs said the passport changes “will incorporate visual imagery, representing key national cultural themes, layered with innovative and effective passport security design”. Officials from the department intend to publish a tender request for the passport redesign within the next month, she added. “The central project of the passport reform programme is the replacement of the current processing system with new, enhanced, core technology that will bring greater resilience, agility and capacity to passport processing systems.”
