Pickrell goat rescue aims to make goats therapy-assisted animals


Previously, Schurman did animal-assisted therapy with dogs for 20 years with the Bryan Health hospital system, but said she received reluctance from some of the residents. “What I found was all of the residents who didn’t want anything to do with the therapy dogs were all over the goats… In a lot of ways, they’re better than my therapy dogs were, because there’s no preconceived notions that people have about how they work. {{featured_button_text}}She now works roughly four hours a day in addition to her job taking care of the animals. Schurman said there are currently no certifying bodies in the U.S. that will certify a goat for animal-assisted therapy. She is also working with the University of Nebraska College of Law to obtain a 501c3 status in Nebraska and federally to help care for the animals and fund educational materials.
