Alexei Navalny was arrested outside his home en route to a demonstration in Moscow, part of countrywide protests spearheaded by the prominent Russian opposition figure. Navalny's wife, Yulia, said on his Twitter feed that he was arrested about a half-hour before the centrepiece demonstration was to begin. Alexei Navalny, Russia's opposition leader, was detained in Moscow on Monday en route to a protest, his wife said. Although city authorities had agreed to a location for the Moscow protest, Navalny called for it to be moved to Tverskaya Street, one of Moscow's main thoroughfares. Moscow police blocked part of the street with big dump trucks in a bid to block the movement of protesters.
