The Rugby Football League have been accused of making “empty gestures” and lacking common sense in their attempts to tackle racism by the only black coach in professional rugby league after Wigan’s Tony Clubb was found guilty of racially abusing an opponent. He told the Guardian: “There was a chance for rugby league to show it was at the forefront of these issues and make a real anti-racism statement. “There was a chance to put ourselves out there and lead the way in showing we won’t accept this behaviour. In my experience, time and time again, rugby league applies no common sense to scenarios like this. Rugby league had a chance to say it won’t tolerate this kind of behaviour; instead, we’ve sent the opposite message out.”
