Ramnath Goenka Awards HIGHLIGHTS: Sensationalism of news is an insult to journalism, says Rajnath Singh

The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, the most prestigious annual event in the Indian media calendar, was held in New Delhi today. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was the chief guest at the event and handed over the awards to 29 winners in 18 categories — across print, broadcast and purely-digital — for outstanding work done in 2017. AdvertisingSpeaking about The Indian Express founder Ramnath Goenka, Singh said, “If I said that the late Ramnath Goenka and his work during the Emergency was like a lamp in dark times, it would not come close to what he really did for India and its democracy.” He also said sensationalism of news is an insult to journalism and that Ramnath Goenka would have never allowed it while he was around. On the relationship between the government and media, the Home Minister said, “Media should act as a bridge between the government and public. I believe that these two pillars, even if they are not friends with each other, should at least not against each other.”
