JEFF VEITCH/DIGVENTURES/DURHAM UNIVERSITYBritish archaeologists have announced the discovery of a rare board game piece, believed to date back to one of the first Viking raids on the island of Lindisfarne. Reports in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, personal letters and the famous Doomsday Stone are the first written sources of Viking raids and the attacks are therefore considered to be the beginning of the Viking era. One of the most remarkable is a board game piece, discovered in a ditch in September last year. It could be from a variant of the Viking board game hnefatafl, also known as the King’s Table.
