Record numbers of migrants enter Spanish enclave of Ceuta

The sudden influx of thousands of migrants into Spanish territory this week has created a new crisis on Europe’s southern border. On Monday, an estimated 6,000 migrants crossed from Morocco to the Spanish city of Ceuta, on the north African coast. Many travelled the short distance by swimming around the border fence or drifting around it on rafts. Moroccan migrants climb a rocky cliffside as they attempt to cross the border from Morocco to Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta. Tear gas fumes fill the air as Spanish security forces watch Moroccan migrants near a border fence in the northern town of Fnideq in an attempt to cross the border into Ceuta.
