Russia is part of a handful of countries still supporting Venezuelan “president” Nicolas Maduro. For Moscow, Washington’s dismissal of Maduro as the country’s true leader is just another regime change policy in the works. President Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. government will not recognize Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela’s president, sworn in for a second term on January 10. Instead, they will recognize National Assembly president Juan Guaido as the highest ranking, democratically elected official in Caracas. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Washington’s public recognition of Guaido as Venezuela’s president was just another sign of Western hypocrisy and was “true interference” into the political affairs of other countries.
