South Africa’s Stellenbosch University (SU) has produced an electric-propelled minibus taxi which is currently being tested for road safety. The University said it partnered with Rham Equipment to retrofit a minibus taxi with electric propulsion. SU said this prototype electric taxi, which will be used to prove the concept and for testing, was recently completed and is operational. Providing an electric minibus blueprintBooysen said the first retrofitted minibus could provide a blueprint for the industry going forward. This will result in a significant peak power draw that needs to be accounted for when planning for the electrification of the minibus taxi sector.
