The South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM) is all the rage right now, but cracks in its supposition are already appearing. With the necessary frameworks under SAREM, industrial and inclusive development of renewable energy and battery storage value chains can take shape. In response to the SAREM, the Presidential Climate Commission points out that by 2030 between 50 and 60GW of renewable energy, supported by co-located energy storage, will be needed. On the targets point, SAWEA notes that despite initial localisation targets reflected in the 2022 draft, this third draft of the SAREM excludes specific targets. While growing the local supply and demand chains, SAREM must allow for and facilitate a continental scope.
