It was decided that Kumar would appear before the CBI in Shillong, a neutral place for both sides. Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the West Bengal government, opposed the CBI's claims. It accused the West Bengal government of impeding the probe into the chit fund scam and sought action against the state government and the state police. According to the CBI, the West Bengal government was creating a hostile environment in the state. The move follows speculation that Kumar would be summoned for interrogation in relation with chit fund scam cases, including the Saradha case.
