Senate rebukes Trump with vote ordering U.S. military to end support for Saudi-led war in Yemen

(AFP/Getty Images)The Senate voted Wednesday to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, its latest rebuke of the Trump administration’s continued embrace of the Saudi monarchy despite growing frustration among lawmakers with its actions on the world stage. “We should not be associated with a bombing campaign that the U.N. tells us is likely a gross violation of human rights,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said on the Senate floor Wednesday. The resolution must still be taken up in the House, where members passed a nearly identical resolution to end U.S. participation in the Yemen war earlier this year. Only seven Senate Republicans joined Democrats on Wednesday to back the vote on ending support for the Saudi war effort. Sanders teamed with Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) on the legislation, which seeks to invoke the War Powers Resolution to curtail American participation in the war.
