The Silver Fern Farms plant in South Taranaki where the spill occurred last year. A Taranaki meat processing plant has been fined $337,000 for an ammonia spill that killed thousands of eels and other fish – a penalty believed to be the largest ever handed out for environmental offending. Thousands, if not tens of thousands, of fish and eels may have been killed as a result of the spill at the Silver Fern Farms plant, the regional council says (file photo). He said the iwi intended to work with Silver Fern Farms to repopulate the stream. Silver Fern Farms Hāwera plant manager Scott Lamplough said the company was deeply sorry about what had happened and was working to put it right.
