John Mitchell has indicated for the first time that he would be interested in working with England beyond this year’s World Cup. Eddie Jones, 59, is contracted as England head coach until 2021, although there are doubts as to whether he will see out the final two years of his deal. Mitchell, 54, was recruited as defence coach last September on a £300,000 deal through to the end of the tournament in Japan in the autumn. The former New Zealand head coach applied for the top job with England in 2015 before the RFU hired Jones. After inspiring England’s performance in their 32-20 victory over Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, Mitchell was asked yesterday whether he would like to extend his time with the team.
