PhotoTREBISOV, Slovakia — Voters have handed a defeat to the most prominent neo-fascist politician in Slovakia, refusing to re-elect the anti-European Union candidate Marian Kotleba as governor of the region of Banska Bystrica, the results of regional elections showed early Sunday. The party, which has governed since 2012, will now lead just two of eight regional governments while candidates supported by opposition parties will lead five. Mr. Kotleba lost to an independent in the eighth region. PhotoMr. Kotleba was first elected governor of Banska Bystrica, in central Slovakia, in 2013 and became a member of Slovakia’s national Parliament three years later, along with 13 other members of his party, known as Kotleba — People’s Party Our Slovakia. His party also faced a retreat in regional Parliaments, winning just two of more than 400 seats, one in Nitra and the other being a seat that Mr. Kotleba himself retained.
