Steel unions plead for industry to lead economic recovery from coronavirus

Major unions launched a campaign calling for the fragile sector to lead the economic fightback from Covid-19. With the Government planning to “build, build, build” back from the unfolding jobs disaster, Community, GMB and Unite said British steel could be the catalyst for a boom. Community general secretary Roy Rickhuss said: “If the Government’s plans to 'build, build, build' are to successfully revive our economy and secure jobs in the UK then they must use Britain’s steel. Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said: “The UK steel industry is central to any post Covid recovery and rebuild strategy, supporting new infrastructure build from hospitals and schools to rail and energy generation.
