Judge Amy Jackson ruled that the Assad regime deliberately targeted Colvin, 56, in an artillery attack to silence her reporting from the besieged Syrian enclave of Baba Amr in the city of Homs in 2012. The judge called the killing part of Syria’s longstanding policy of violence towards the media, which it had labelled “enemies of the state”. The award of $300 million, twice the typical amount for a victim of terrorism, was in recognition of the “unconscionable act” of the Syrian regime in targeting and killing a journalist for her work exposing its atrocities.
