Taiwan raises alert for oncoming storm

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau issued land and sea warnings for a tropical storm that had formed in the South China Sea earlier in the morning and was moving toward the Taiwan Strait. As of 8:00 a.m. local time, the tropical storm, which had not yet been named, was located 390 kilometers southwest of Taiwan's southern tip of Eluanbi, the bureau said, CNA reports. The storm was moving north-northeast at a speed of 26-23 kilometers per hour, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts of up to 90 kph, according to the CWB. With a radius of 80 km, the storm is gradually approaching the Bashi Channel, posing a threat to the Pratas Islands, Taiwan Strait and waters off Taiwan's northern coast over the next 24 hours, the CWB said, warning ships in those areas to be on the alert.
