Babies’R’Us may be dead but the baby business is alive and well and Target, among other retailers, is going after it with nothing short of youthful exuberance. And it comes following a strong holiday selling season for Target in the baby business, helped along by a physical and merchandising expansion of the store’s assortment in this classification. Last year about 3.8 million babies were born in the country, a historic low given the overall population. Unlike some other demographic categories which can be cajoled or otherwise spun, the baby market is finite. So with this big a void in the marketplace with their departure, Target is in a good position to gain business.
