The UK Government conducted a trial of a new public alert system designed to warn the public if there is a danger to life nearby. The siren would be no louder than a standard mobile ringtone with the message “This is a test of Emergency Alerts”. Once established, the system aims to be used in life-threatening situations such as flooding and wildfires. Officials said that it is intended to warn users of the life-threatening emergencies nearby and instruct them to take action to protect themselves and others. Users will only receive alerts based on their registered address, and mobile phones that are off or in airplane mode will not receive the alert.
