The mysterious Australian bushranger who terrorised New Zealand


Codrington Revingston was the mysterious scourge of Port Fairy, repeatedly holding up the Portland mail, a scene this image from 1978 re-enacts. You will find it on the Princes Highway between Port Fairy and Portland, in far south-western Victoria. And yet it is the only place in Australia named after a bushranger. Powling's Port Fairy: the First 50 Years, which lists Green's various aliases: Carrington Gessington, Condrington Revingstone and Codrington Leviston. Finally, the only bushranger to have an Australian village named after him died of chronic bronchitis in Wellington's Terrace Gaol on September 3, 1885.
