Thermal power generation dominates COMESA region


[Courtesy]COMESA region has reported a steady rise in the total installed power generation capacity, a joint committee meeting on transport and communications, information technology and energy heard on Monday. Thermal power generation dominates power generation accounting for about 78 percent of total installed capacity while hydro and renewable energy account for 17 per cent and 5 per cent respectively. According to a statement from COMESA, regarding power generation, transmission and regulation, several initiatives are also underway including the setting up of an electricity trading platform and rules, by the Eastern Africa Power Pool. Specifically, the COMESA Yellow Card has gained acceptance beyond the region with non-COMESA member States such as Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique and South Sudan adopting it. On railways development, Member States have attempted to improve their operations by implementing various initiatives such as privatization and restructuring.
