Rich and creamy, and protein-packed – Greek yogurt has its fair share of admirers – and also imitators. From Danone’s Oikos to Yoplait’s Greek 100 and Chobani, the world’s largest yogurt producers market several different versions to consumers. If the application is accepted, only yogurt made in Greece under strict conditions would qualify to use the name. The world market for Greek yogurt is estimated at more than US$50 billion and growing, according to the Dairy Reporter. If Greece is successful in its bid to protect “Greek yogurt,” the designations will only apply in the EU.
