The great tit in box number O27 is cross. As the door to her nest is opened she glares with affronted dignity at the latest PhD researcher to bother her. Beneath her, the bright yellow and gaping beak of a day-old chick reaches for the light, and is recorded for science. It has been exactly 75 years since an affronted great tit first glared at a researcher in this part of Oxford, in what have become the most studied woods in the world.
