Naomi Osaka suffered a shock exit from the women's singles at the hands of Czech Republic's Vondrousova. Vondrousova was very crafty on the day, producing a series of smart drop shot winners which proved difficult for Osaka to handle. The women’s singles draw is now wide open following the exit of Osaka, who now joins Australian top seed, Ashleigh Barty, out of the games. Barty also shocked everyone after she bowed out in the first round of the women’s singles in her Olympics debut. Osaka and Barty’s exits now leave the women’s singles wide open, with Ukrainian fourth seed Elina Svitolina now the highest-ranked lady left in the category.
