Toronto Maple Leafs say goodbye to Joe Louis Arena, boost playoff hopes by edging past Detroit Red Wings 5-4

DETROIT — Mike Babcock was misty eyed to leave Joe Louis Arena for the last time. The eliminated Wings gave them fits and the crowd was in New Year’s Eve mode this Saturday night, but the Leafs survived the late charge. “We have good young players and whoever drafted them, Mark Hunter and his group, have done a good job. We’re in an unbelievable position.”Detroit’s super sophomore Dylan Larkin, who made his playoff debut last year, gave a thoughtful response earlier in the day when asked what the young Leafs can expect if and when they taste playoffs. They let Detroit warm up Andersen with at least one early turnover that an open Drew Miller couldn’t convert.
