( Brent Huffman photo )Hamlet: February 1, 1982 — July 6, 2016 Hamlet, the Toronto Zoo’s 34-year-old southern hairy-nosed wombat, passed away peacefully in Scarborough on Wednesday, surrounded by his keepers. The world's oldest wombat passed away at age 34 on July 6, 2016. Born in 1982 at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, he moved to the Toronto zoo in 1984 and was one of the first animals to fill the Australasia Pavilion, becoming a long-time ambassador for Australian wildlife.
