Within a 24-hour period in the middle of last week, Toyota declared a massive recall and then announced the suspension of production at plants in northern Japan due to an earthquake. The stoppages will temporarily affect all Toyota and Lexus lines in Japan, according to a Toyota spokesperson. Of the recalled 1 million vehicles, 554,000 were sold in Japan, 217,000 in North America, and 219,000 in Europe. In the same week as the Toyota recall, Ford also issued a giant recall for nearly 2 million pickup trucks to fix a seatbelt defect that could trigger vehicle fires. As for the quake-induced production suspension, Toyota said the plant closures began Saturday morning but confirmed that production would resume.
