Trudeau expected to name Ontario judge to Supreme Court of Canada before Canada Day

OTTAWA—The Supreme Court of Canada expects that the federal Liberal government will name a new Ontario judge on the high court before Canada Day on July 1, says a source with knowledge of the process. That post is currently being filled on a temporary basis by Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice Richard Wagner. However, the Trudeau government has signalled it will legislate bilingualism as a job requirement for Supreme Court of Canada judges. Trudeau’s predecessor Stephen Harper also named Supreme Court of Canada judges just prior to the 2008 and 2015 elections. In addition to Kasirer, Trudeau named Newfoundland and Labrador judge Malcolm Rowe and Alberta judge Sheilah Martin to the high court bench.
