Twenty road fatalities on first ‘dangerous day’


(Photo: Varuth Hirunyatheb)Twenty people died and 132 were injured in 135 road accidents across Thailand on Friday — the first of the “seven dangerous days” of Songkran holiday travel, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Saturday. The highest number of accidents occurred in the southern provinces of Trang and Songkhla, with each recording eight. Chiang Mai recorded the highest number of drunk-driving cases on the first day of stepped-up road safety enforcement. Chiang Mai topped the list with 74 cases, followed by Samut Prakan (54) and Bangkok (43). Driving under the influence of drugs accounted for 80 cases (18.3%), followed by three reckless driving cases, said Mr Piya.
