Britain could have its hottest September day in more than 50 years. However, gale force winds are forecast to hit Northern Ireland and the west coast of Scotland by the end of Sunday ahead of the warmer air arriving. If the mercury rises above 31.6C, which was reached at Gatwick on 2 September 1961, then it will be the hottest September day for 55 years. Britons can expect to bake in above-average temperatures across the UK for the rest of the week, the Met Office said. Conditions will become more unsettled on Thursday and Friday when a band of rain will sweep east, bringing scattered showers.
