South-east England is enjoying Britain’s hottest September day for almost 70 years, with a late summer heatwave pushing the mercury to more than 32C. A high of 32.8C (91F) was recorded at Heathrow and in Kew, both in west London, at lunchtime on Tuesday, the Met Office said, matching temperatures last recorded in Britain in 1949. The last time a September high of 32.8C was recorded was on 5 September 1949, in Maldon, Essex, Madge said. The highest September temperature ever recorded was in 1906 when the mercury hit 35.6C in Bawtry, South Yorkshire. But for some people, such as older people, those with underlying health conditions and those with young children, summer heat can bring real health risks.
