The Aunt Jemima character has long been associated with racism and slavery, as it comes from a vaudeville era song 'Old Aunt Jemima' and is based off the mammy. By 1989, Aunt Jemima had lost weight, abandoned her kerchief and looked more like a typical modern housewife. She tweeted: 'I know for some [white people] the Aunt Jemima brand being canceled may seem petty. Singer and songwriter Kirby was among those online that had called for a change to the Aunt Jemima brand.
