Van der Poel settles debt for grandfather Poulidor with Tour de France yellow


Mathieu Van der Poel won stage 2 of the Tour de France on Sunday to claim the overall leader's yellow jersey and strike a blow for his famous cycling family. "Imagine how he'd feel, he's not here," said van der Poel of Poulidor who died in 2019 at the age of 83. Poulidor raced the Tour de France 14 times, ending it second three times and third five times. "The tears came when they told me I had the yellow jersey," he said breaking down again. Van der Poel is a mountain bike world champion and is a favourite for gold at the Tokyo Olympics with Britain's Tom Pidcock.
