The town's name has attracted English speakers who over the years have been making jokes and taking photos near signs showing the word "F***ing". It is not clear why the village was named "F***ing", but some experts say it dates back to the 11th century. The name, which will be changed at the beginning of 2021, has nothing to do with the English swear word but because of a strange coincidence it is spelt in the same way. But the name "F***ing" could even go back to the sixth century as reports say a Bavarian nobleman named Focko founded a settlement in the area. In a land registry map from 1825 the village is called Fuking - and it is not clear when or why the "c" was added, making it sound like the English swear word.
