Anyone with inside knowledge of Ontario’s long-term care system can attest to the results of a survey that found 80 per cent of frontline workers face “constant” on-the-job violence that usually originates, sadly, from the people in their care. The unfortunate lack of reporting means that no one — including government decision-makers — will understand the true extent of the violence. Roughly 90 per cent of people living in long-term care homes have cognitive decline. Dementia can alter their ability to communicate and understand workers’ intent. Some are terrified when a worker, trying to stay on that tight schedule, removes the their clothes to give a bath or help with toileting.
