Prices of essential goods in Libya recorded a noticeable increase in February, according to a report by the World Food Programme (WFP), amid the impact of the dinar’s depreciation and ongoing economic pressures. The national basic expenditure index rose by 5%, reaching approximately 1,128 dinars, with sharp increases recorded in the eastern and southern regions, while the western region saw a slight decline of 1.3%. The report explained that the 14.7% depreciation of the dinar in January directly affected the prices of imported goods, such as rice, oil, sugar, and processed foods, in addition to higher transportation costs due to the country’s heavy reliance on imports. It added that some goods have been sold at subsidised prices since 15 February, but the impact of this measure on the market remains limited.
