Wannabe tradesman who spent a lifetime as an optician in Christchurch heads into retirement

Christchurch optometrist John Veale closed his business in Shirley, winding down a career which started in 1971. I wanted to be a plumber or an electrician, I wanted to do practical things and make some money. In 1999 John Hulme and I started Veale and Hulme in Gloucester St. John (Hulme) retired about eight years ago. I went to Berkeley (University of California, Berkeley) halfway through my optometry degree for about five months on a research project. On one of your trips to Rarotonga in 2019 you had your own eye issue didn’t you?
