A house in Washington Valley, Nelson, caught fire early Sunday afternoon. Neighbour Cornelius Prinsloo said he and his flatmates smelled smoke from inside their nearby house and when he went outside he saw “smoke pouring out of the house”. Another neighbour said she didn't see the start of the blaze, but came outside when she saw and smelled the smoke. It's an over 100-year-old house, so it will be heart rimu, it will be so dry that it'll burn hot,” she said.
