What snowplow operators want you to know to be safe this winter

Wednesday, snowplow operators want Islanders to know a few things to stay safe on the roads. Jimmy Ryhnes, snowplow operations supervisor for Queens County, said the winter season so far has been extremely busy for operators with snow coming early and remaining consistent. Snowplow operators will use the long blade on the side, called a 'wing,' to push existing snow banks further away from the road when more snow is expected. That way they're safe. We're there for a reason, to keep the road safe for the public, but sometimes people I know haven't got much patience," he said.
