The adage “cold hands, warm heart” may have some basis in science (if there is less blood flowing to your extremities, there should be more running through your organs), but that will be of little consolation to those who struggle with painful digits at this time of year. It may seem a trivial complaint, but for millions in the UK it is often anything but. We all get cold hands and feet from time to time, but in extreme cases they can make everyday tasks — from de-icing the car to hosing down a dirty dog — very unpleasant.
