So now that the United States has won the Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey, the U.S. jumps right to the top of those Olympic medals standings/counts/trackers, right? A debate has actually dragged on for decades about how an Olympic medals standings should be compiled — by total medals, or just gold medals? Shouldn’t the winning country of, say, the four-man bobsleigh get credit for four gold medals? Medals tables showed up only 12 years after the Olympics were revived. But that game was not even for a medal, only for a spot in the gold medal game.
