Recently, the Washington Post Capital Weather Gang wrote an interesting article about advanced tornado warnings. They reported that lead time for tornado warnings is down to about 9 minutes as compared 13-15 minutes (2005 to 2011). It lead me to consider one of the goals stated in the landmark weather bill. While that sounds good, there is some evidence that 1-hour lead time for tornado warnings may be a bad thing. Uccellini drove home the point that "such tornadoes are an enormous challenge to observing, forecasting, and warning process (and associated statistics)."
