Today’s mega-merger between Sainsbury’s and Asda highlights an important trend – everyone wants U.K. assets except investors. U.K. assets are widely unloved. U.K. assets look cheap compared to the rest of the world, and organic growth is hard to find. It is no coincidence that many acquisitions are focused on U.K. retail, the most beleaguered of all the U.K.’s beleaguered sectors. U.K. assets are a little bit cheap; add in the currency and they look extremely cheap.
