Mimouna is a uniquely Moroccan Jewish celebration that spread more widely across Sephardi communities in the 20th century. To understand Mimouna is to understand the place of Jews in Morocco. In North Africa, Jewish communities long predate Islam; in Morocco, their presence is often traced as far back as the 4th century BCE.
